The crockpot is one of the best time saving appliances in the house. Beginning cooks love it because they can fill it, turn it on and go on with their lives. Hours later they can come home to a ready made dinner. Sometimes, however, it is just not that simple. Not all the meals cooked in a crockpot came out tasting great.

There is nothing worse than looking forward to a good meal when you get home, and finding that it tastes like cardboard. A lot of people try to fix this by adding herbs or spices to it the next time, but that doesn’t always work either. The reason for this is that some herbs and spices break down or become bitter after being cooked for several hours. Cayenne pepper and Tabasco sauce fall into this category. It is recommended that if you want to use an herb or spice for all day cooking, you need to use whole leaf herbs and spices. If you want to use ground herbs and spices, you need to wait and put them in the meal for the last hour of cooking. It is also suggested that only small amounts be used.

A lot of people like to add vegetables to their meals in the crockpot. Some vegetables need to be added at a later time. Tender vegetables, such as zucchini, mushrooms or tomatoes should be added during the last 45 minutes of cooking. This keeps them from overcooking and losing their flavor. Since vegetables take longer to cook than meat, it is recommended that they be chopped into pieces rather than be cooked whole. Potatoes and carrots fall into this category.

Pasta is another food that needs to be added to crockpot dishes at a later time. Pasta requires a lot of liquid to cook. For that reason it should be added to the crockpot meal closer to the end of the cooking time. The exact amount of time required for the pasta depends on the consistency of doneness you require. Like pasta, rice requires a lot of liquid during cooking. You might want to consider adding it later if the meal does not have a lot of liquid.

Dairy products are also added later in crockpot cooking, unless required to do so by the recipe. Cheese becomes a liquid and loses it consistency when cooked for long periods of time. If it is cooked on high temperatures, it can burn and ruin the entire meal.

Some slow cookers or crockpots are supplied with recipe booklets. Many recipes are found in cookbooks and on the internet. The internet has many sights that contain tips on crockpot cooking and recommendations on when to add certain types of ingredients to the crockpot. If an ingredient could ruin your meal, sometimes later is better in added it to the meal.
